BMW’s four-door coupe, the 8 Series/Gran Turismo
Minor Changes & Pricing | Dean | September 8, 2008 at 17:19BMW is planning to launch a four-door coupe to compete with the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and Mercedes-Benz CLS3 AMG.
The name is not yet finalised, but the debate is between either the GT, which is short for Gran Turismo, or the 8 Series name. It is more likely that the model will be named the 8-Series and it will also slot into BMW’s line up as the highest, most luxurious and expensive BMW model.
This model will be the first non-M car built by the performance division. The new four-door coupe will have a large wheebase and it is expected to be based on the underpinnings of the 2009 7-series.
We can also assume that there will be a high usage of carbon fibre parts to reduce the weight in the model and increase performance. The engine will either be a V8-V10 twin-turbo engine or a 6.0 litre naturally aspirated V12.
The release date is set for 2010.
