Volkswagen are hard at work preparing their own electric model for the city. Their new model will be based on the VW Up!, and it is expected to be released around 2013. The up! is meant to be launched in 2011, where it will then have the electric model only launched 2 years after that.
The details are bit hidden at this point, but when we look at the previous VW concepts, such as the up! blue plug-in hybrid, we can expect an electric engine with a lithium-ion battery, as well as a range of about 65 miles in the city. The electric motor will be good for 45kW.
Volkswagen aren’t only going to produce an electric Up!, they are expected to release various fuel efficient version,s such as a petrol-electric hybrid, an MPV as well as a sporty Cabriolet.
The price tag on the up! is expected to be around 8,000 euro’s, and it will be produced at the Slovakian plant in Bratislava.
Volkswagen will stop there. The company will then use this model, and slap on a new badge for the Skoda and SEAT brands.
