News around the Opel sale is hinting at RHJ International taking the lead in buying the company. It was said that a basic contract between RHJ and GM was drawn up, which brings the Belgium company into a better position than Magna.
RHJ’s CEO, Leonhard Fischer, recently said that the company’s role in the negotiations are not as important as the Magna ones which come with several unclear points.
“We started the week with about 30 issues to resolve, including NewOpel involvement with Chevrolet in Russia, intellectual property transfer rights in Russia, advanced technology access, product development responsibilities, minority shareholder rights and other items,” John Smith, GM Group Vice President
GM would prefer to team up with RHJ, as their plans are easier to implement and maintain.
“It would require less monetary participation by the government and would keep our global alignments solid, while still creating an independent Opel/Vauxhall organization in Germany. This remains a reasonable and viable option to be considered as the very difficult issues around the Magna negotiations continue to be worked,” he said.
RHJ are planning to revise their bid, where they will change the amount of funding received from the government.
