Volvo has claimed that they use the most expensive dummies, where their test range features around 100 members. It was said that the test dummy family of 100 units costs around $205,400 or 1.5 MSEK. The family is based on 19 members with 8 adults and 11 children where the lightest dummy is a 3kg baby.
The Swedish automaker said that there are various other configurations available for various tests and overall the total is set at 100 dummies. The company uses such a large range as they find it really important to use children and adults of different ages in their tests.
“It’s very difficult to develop crash-test dummies. The aim is to create as close a resemblance to a real human being as possible. At the same time, however, it has to be a tough tool. One highly successful example dates from the 1990s when Swedish researchers developed a crash-test dummy for rear-end collisions. This dummy, which features a very detailed spine, is now used the world over to evaluate whiplash injuries,” says Lotta Jakobsson, biomechanics and technical specialist with the Volvo Cars Safety Centre at Volvo Cars.
All of the dummies can be configured for various tests, and they all have replaceable parts which might break during tests. It was said that some of the dummies at the Volvo test center are over 30 years old and they are still going strong, thanks to the replaceable part feature.
Each dummy features around 100 measurements which are all recorded to register the forces that are exerted on the head, neck, spine, chest, hips and legs during a collision.
