After recent news regarding the Audi RS6 dropping it’s V10 for a twin turbo V8, sources have revealed that BMW will also drop their V10 engine in the M5 for a twin-turbocharged V8 setup. Insiders on the matter have details on matter at hand.
It was said that the new engine will be a direct-injection V8 unit with a 4.8-litre displacement, along with a power output of around 600-horsepower. The transmission used will be a new 8-speed dual clutch transmission that is aimed towards power, with better fuel-consumption.
Sources have said that the new M5 shall even come with a new BMW KERS system, similar to that found in a Formula One car. Alongside this technology the customers can expect a fuel-saving technology which will cut off cylinders for better consumption.
Expect BMW to release this around 2011-2012.
Oh, and for those wondering — This does confirm our last little bit of speculation about a M5 engine change.
