Fiat has decided that they will end the life of the Palio. The Italian automaker will stop creating the car by the end of 2009, and this will finish off a total life span of 10 years with 33,000 sales. The Palio will rest in peace alongside the Volkswagen Citi Golf.
The Palio was first introduced during 2000 where it was aimed at expanding the company’s portfolio. This car took over from the Fiat Uno, and it was a large step in terms of style, comfort and quality.
Fiat’s mini-car was affordable, and effective. It used a 1.2-litre engine along with a five-door design.
It’s life span saw a refresh in 2005, along with several limited editions which included the Go!, Eco, Racing and Special Series.
“The Palio has been a consistent performer and has helped put Fiat on the map in South Africa. So while its passing is tinged with nostalgia, the future for the Fiat brand in this country is even more exiting. Without wanting to give too much away, all I can say is watch this space because some great things are going to be happening in 2010. The one involves the Punto, a model that is synonymous with world class quality, safety and comfort, while the other involves our jewel in the crown – the inimitable Fiat 500,” said Oscar Rivoli, Managing Director of Fiat Group Automobiles South Africa.
