Audi are already dominating the upper-class market with models such as the A6, A8 and R8, where they are now interested in becoming involved with smaller cars. The company is planning to create an A1 which will expand their global reach.

The A1 will go on sale during the summer months of 2010 in Europe, and it will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show. Reports say that the styling on the Audi A1 will be similar to that of the Metroproject Quattro concept from Tokyo 2007.

Audi will apparently share the platform with VW’s Polo and this will cut the overall cost.

Engines should include a 1.2-litre TFSI unit with 63kW and 160Nm of torque, a 1.4-litre TFSI with 90kW and 200Nm of torque and then a 1.6-litre TDI with 77kW and 250Nm of torque. The company will then try rival the MINI performance models with an S1 which boasts a 132kW engine with a 7-speed S-Tronic ‘box. The S1 will only arrive in 2011.

There will then be an Audi A1 Sportback, as well as a soft-top cabriolet model. These two models will arrive in 2012. The market might even see a RS1 with a lot more power and more aggressive styling.
