The Nissan and Renault CEO, Carlos Ghosn said that the automobile group is planning to create a cheaper Tata Nano rival. The CEO revealed that these companies will partner with another Indian brand in an attempt to top the cheap/small car market.
Carlos Ghosn said that the ‘ultra low-cost car’ will be design by both Renault and Nissan, where it will then be built by Bajaj Auto.
The news regarding the car states that it will be more fuel-efficient, as well as cheaper when it is released in 2012.
The companies started chatting about a small car about two years ago, where Ghosn said that he wasn’t really worried about the selling price, as he would only like the cheapest car to make. About two years ago the companies budgeted for a car which costs around $2,500 to $3,000.
“The costing [of the Bajaj car] will depend on how efficient the project is and how efficiently they manage to get raw materials, and excise and tax breaks by putting the plant in a particular location,” said Vaishali Jajoo, analyst with Angel Broking in Mumbai.
