BMW are moving forward with a new M-badged version of a 1-Series. The two-door coupe will use a 3.0-litre straight six petrol engine which uses a twin-turbocharged system. The power will be about 260kW where the torque will be around 500Nm.

Expect a rear wheel drive layout, similar to every other BMW model. This layout will boast a limited slip differential system along with a fast changing double-clutch gearbox as the standard unit.

The 0-100km/h time will be 5.5 seconds while the top speed will be 250km/h.

“I want to set a clear signal that our products are financially accessible,” M Division boss Kay Segler is quoted as saying. “With the modular production processes in place at BMW, it is possible to create performance cars that customers can not only dream about owning but also realistically afford.”

Pricing should be about $61,000 and it will hit the UK roads in 2011. This means that the 1-Series Motorsport Model will only hit South Africa after that, for a price of about R600,000 plus.

Changes to the body include a new front spoiler, chunkier side skills, a four piece exhaust kit, new stop/start technologies and brake regeneration.

The name still needs to be confirmed, but for now, we’ll call it the M1.
