The world is facing high fuel prices, which won’t go away, so Ford has realised that it can’t carry on selling large pickup trucks and large SUV’s, as buyers are also starting to worry about fuel laws now. This has pointed Ford in the direction of a smaller future, by creating smaller cars and lower their sales volume.

Chrysler has also decided that this is a good route to go with as they hope that their future with its project Genesis is successful.

Ford will be cutting down on its production by 15% in the second quarter and around 20% in the third quarter of 2008. This will mean that fewer vehicles will be built this year.

General Motors is also coming off of a strike which cost them nearly 300,000 units of production and $2.8 billion in sales and they have not announced any similar plans either.

Ford will need to build more fuel-friendly vehicles to turn its sales around. The fuel friendly cars like the global Ford Focus aren’t due until 2010. Ford also plan on slashing around 9,000 jobs.
